ENROLL A CHILD
In March 2007, Adoptee Mentor Program will kick off its first year of bringing Bay Area International adoptees together. Give your child the unique opportunity to be a part of the inaugural group of adoptees and volunteer adult mentors. This will be the first program of its kind in San Francisco and we are teeming with excitement to build bridges within the international adoption community!
Adoptee Mentor Program is a non profit organization working to support internationally adopted children through one-to-one mentor relationships and large group adoptee and mentor gatherings. Through these relationships our objectives are to:
- Connect adoptees of all ages
- Give young adoptees the opportunity to share and express themselves in a large group setting and one on one with mentors
- Use the support of adult adoptees to help develop security and fulfillment in young adoptees and emphasize that they are not alone.
- Build a unified multi-cultural adoptee group in San Francisco
We are looking for adoptees aged 9-12 years old who are want to meet and have fun with other international adoptees. Each month mentors and adoptees will alternate between group gatherings (multiple adult mentors and adoptees) and individual one on one activity (mentors and adoptees pair off and meet separately).
Our initial get together will be a brunch with parents, children, mentors, and volunteers. The goal of the brunch is to for everyone to get to know each other and for the children to become familiar with the mentors while in the safety of their parents. During the brunch the children will complete a questionnaire. After the brunch the mentors will read through the questionnaires and choose their child based on shared interests.
Following the brunch, mentors and children will meet up for the first large group gathering. And the month after that each mentor and child will meet one on one. Mentors are expected to meet up separately with their child’s parent prior to the first one on one meeting. Our goal is to give your child exposure to the larger group as well as one on one time to develop a stronger relationship with their mentor.
CHILD SAFETY
The safely of your child is very important to us. Adoptee Mentor Program carefully screens each mentor applicant and runs Live Scan background checks on all mentors and staff. Additionally, regularly scheduled monthly check in calls are scheduled with each mentor, to assess each pair's progress and to answer questions and concerns. Last, group quarterly meetings are organized for all mentors to provide additional support and training. We hope the training and guidance we give the mentors enables them to have fun, positive meetings with your child. However, if parents have concern about their mentor or the organization they are encouraged to contact us immediately.
HOW WE FIND OUR MENTORS
All of our mentors are volunteer adult adoptees from the Bay Area. We require our mentors to:
- Be an international adoptee older than 21 years old
- Have a positive attitude
- Have the ability to communicate effectively
- Have a desire to help and support a young adoptee
- Commit to Adoptee Mentor Program for a minimum of one year
INTERVIEW PROCESS
Once we receive a complete application for your child, Adoptee Mentor Program will schedule an in person interview. At least one parent must be present. The goal of the interview is to learn about your child, their history, and your family.
COST
The cost to participate is $20 per month. Going forward we hope to subsidize more of the activity costs with private and community donations.
